Culturally Responsive Teaching: Lesson Planning for Elementary and Middle Grades by Jacqueline Jordan Irvine, How do I plan lessons for today's diverse classrooms? This book helps pre-service teachers answer this question and learn to create and use such lessons in their classrooms. It is the first book to provide well-developed content-specific lesson plans that reflect cultural diversity in the United States. Rather than taking the traditional foundations-oriented, culture and history approach, this text translates that cultural and historical knowledge of specific minority groups into examples for instructional use. The text features entire field-tested units for elementary and middle grades in four content areas, language arts, mathematics, science, and social studies. For example, in the language arts unit, "Stories, Stories, Stories," students tell, write, and read stories that build on their cultural background and experiences. The math unit explores informal geometry in the patterns of Navajo rugs, African textiles, and Mexican pottery. The science unit connects weather experiences to cultural folk myths and sayings. The social studies unit examines changing requirements for voting in the USA. The text can be used as a supplement for general or elementary methods, student field experience, or multicultural education, or as a main text in practice-oriented multicultural education and multicultural curriculum courses.
Talking Dollars and Making Sense: A Financial Planning Guide for African-Americans by Brooke M. Stephens, The African-American community controls more than $400 billion in income. Yet we save and invest less than one percent of our money for the long term! Financial advisor Brooke Stephens, a Wall Street pro who regularly appeared on FX cable TV's Breakfast Time and America Online's Net Noir site, says we just can't afford to "think poor". For ourselves, our children, and our community, we must begin building wealth, one person at a time. Surprisingly, it isn't hard. Not if you're willing to apply a plan. And that, she says, begins with having the right attitude - and the right information. This is the book that will show you how to strengthen your financial position, step-by-step. It also offers a rare perspective on what African-American history can teach us about our financial freedom. Using lessons drawn from the lives of black entrepreneurs and investors, the author tells how to get comfortable with finances, develop an investment strategy, save more money at higher returns, set goals, manage credit, get the most for your housing dollar, insure yourself wisely, save for college, form an investment club, and retire with security. Brooke Stephens tackles controversial issues about how middle-class African-Americans are made to feel as if we've abandoned our roots when we pursue wealth ... why we tend to overspend on luxuries ... how to overcome the emotional baggage of our economic history ... and how to hold onto hard-earned prosperity.
Lesson plan - A lesson plan is a teacher's detailed description of the course of instruction for an individual lesson. While there is no one way to construct a correct lesson plan, most lesson plans contain some or all of these elements, typically in this order: South African Telephone Numbering Plan - South Africa has switched to a closed numbering system, although as of 2005 it still isn't mandatory to dial the three-digit area code. The trunk prefix is still '0', with the system generally organised geographically. Love Is the Plan the Plan Is Death - "Love Is the Plan the Plan Is Death" by James Tiptree, Jr. (pseudonym of Alice Sheldon) won a Nebula Award for Best Short Story in 1973.
