A Guide to Pre-Columbian Art by Jean Paul Barbier,

A Guide to Pre-Columbian Art by Jean Paul Barbier,
This guide, the product of a collaboration between the Museu Barbier-Mueller in Geneva, the Institut de Cultura in Barcelona, and Skira publishers in Milan, not only analyses the origins and the decline of the great ancient American civilisations (Mayas, Aztecs, Incas, etc.), but also examines cultures which are less well-known to the general public. Detailed geographical maps, photographs of archaeological sites, and even some drawings, help to explain the stone and wooden sculptures, ceramics, gold and silver jewellery, fabrics, and other works of art (some of which are two or three thousand years old) which have been selected from the rich collections of the Museu Barbier-Mueller of pre-Columbian art at Barcelona.

Idols Behind Altars: Modern Mexican Art and Its Cultural Roots by Anita Brenner,
Idols Behind Altars: Modern Mexican Art and Its Cultural Roots by Anita Brenner,
Art critic, historian and journalist Anita Brenner (1905-1974) is acknowledged to be one of the most important and perceptive writers on the art, culture, and political history of Mexico. "Idols Behind Altars is her influential historical and critical study of modern Mexican art and its roots. It was one of the first books to afford Mexican art the same serious considerations as European and Asian art and remains indispensable for anyone interested in the subject. The works of such major figures as Diego Rivera, Jose Clemente Orozco, David Alfaro Siqueiros, Francisco Goitia and Jean Charlot are examined in the cultural context of pre-Columbian times through the 19th century. Brenner's astute analysis of Mexican history, her keen insights into revolutionary politics, and her passionate advocacy of Mexican art infuse this book with seminal importance. 117 illustrations--including some early photographs by Edward Weston--enhance the text. Unabridged republication of the edition published by Payson & Clarke, Ltd., New York, 1929. 117 black-and-white illustrations. Appendixes. Index.

Pre-Columbian art - Pre-Columbian art is the art of Central and South America in the time prior to the arrival of European colonizers in the 16th century.

Culture of Peru - The art of Peru was shaped by the relationship between Hispanic and Amerindian cultures. During pre-Columbian times, Peru was one of the major centers of artistic expression in The Americas, where Pre-Inca cultures, such as ChavĂn, Moche, Paracas, Huari (Wari), Nazca, Chimu, and Tiahuanaco developed high-quality pottery, textiles, jewelry, and sculpture.

Pre-Columbian Maya dance - In pre-Columbian Maya civilization, ritual dance had great importance. However, since dance is a transient art, it is inherently difficult for archeologists to find and evaluate evidence of its role.

Australian Aboriginal art - Australian Aboriginal art refers to art done by Australian Aborigines, covering art that pre-dates European colonisation as well as contemporary art by Aborigines based on traditional culture. It is not restricted to merely paintings, but includes a wide variety of media including wood carving, sculpture and ceremonial clothing.
